Classic bishop sac, nice when you pull it off but not when it's done to you.

when you see a free piece dangling there it's hard to not grab it I guess.

Um, no. That's what you get when you miss a mate in one. 14) .. Rd4 or Re4 and black keeps the extra pieces. Sac was beyond unsound. I'm hoping this was a blitz game!

You got greedy. You could have refuted the mate and then been golden.

It was actually a long play game (36 moves in 90 minutes + 30 minutes finish). I think I just got carried away after my opponent played the opening so badly and had a Kramnik moment.

Ignoring the bishop and playing 12...Kh8 probably would have been sensible, but I think 14...Rd8 or Re8 would have allowed the king to escape all the possible checks and threats via f8-e7-d8-c7. A higher rated friend has also suggested that it might have been better not to castle when I did, I did consider 11...b6 intending Ba6 but I thought that left the queen a little stranded.

Don't be absurd. Black was fine before white's blunder on move nine, and was then simply winning until he missed an elementary mate in one.

It was unsound bishop sacrifice in an inferior position.

it was technically unsound but for this player in this game it was correct. Sometimes you get the feeling that your opponent will panic if you play agressive moves. It can be a quick knockout or a horrible loss.

Never castle kingside if you play the French as black. (or any opening where your knight has been dislodged and the bishops, knight and queen are bearing down on the king side.)

The king is often perfectly safe on the kingside in the French, even when forced there without castling: Game 2250846
