after reviewing the problum, i see that it is poorly stated.
it would better read: Given points A and B x units appart, find point C such that the mesure of line AC plus the mesure of line BC equals y units, and the mesure of angle ABC equals 90 degrees using only compass and strait edge.
Find the midpoint of line AB using the compass and the straight edge.
Use the compass to draw a circle of diameter AB centred on said midpoint.
Pull the piece of string taught and find the position where you can hold it taught and have it touching the circle you have drawn.
The point where the string touches the circle is point C as required.
The solution has no answer if the string is longer than sqrt(2).x

i was awear that if the string was two long, it could not be done, but i hadn't bothered figuring out the equation for it.
good job.🙂🙂🙂

Are we doing your homework or something?
thats cool.
well, the half circle will have to be diagnal in the square. diamiter probably something like half way between x and the diagal of the square.
do you want to do my calculus homework, while I do your geometrey?
(Where's USM? Not University of Southern Maine is it?)
