There are four more squares to find.

OK, it's time to break this problem down step by step.

What is the minimum number of pawn captures needed to get this pawn structure?
Minimum Black pawn captures: 4
axb6, dxe6, and the h-pawn captured twice to reach f2.

Minimum White pawn captures: 5
hxg3 [or g4], c-pawn captured 3 times to reach f7, bxc7.

Capture balance:
12 White units on board + 4 bP captures = 16. All White units must play a part in the capturing scheme. Every single White unit not on the board must have been captured by a bP.

11 Black units on board + 5 wP captures = 16. All Black units must play a part in the capturing scheme. Every single Black unit not on the board must have been captured by a wP.

Next step: Which pieces were captured?

Well, it could be h-pawn capturing twice or one capture from g-pawn and another from h-pawn.

Sorry, I think I arrived at a dead end with my analysis. I want to do another try but I have not much time these days.

Edit: Ups... How do you do quotes with this thing?? 😛

When you reply and quote, there are two text boxes. Put the quoted stuff in the lower one, and your reply in the upper one, and it will come out right.

It is not so important to know whether Pf2 was originally the h-pawn. It's more important to know that it must make at least one capture [gxf].
