Oh, this thread went off topic quite in a hurry...
Originally posted by buckkyThere was a bunch of devotees living in a small coastal town I used to frequent. Had a bookshop there: a section devoted to the guru. Only one I sampled was a book for children: not a book I'd give to any child for the simple reason that it disturbed the crap out of me. Something about the drawings: flatly unwholesome. The Jim Jones light started blinking. Burn it. Burn all that crap. Get it out of your house ...
I just found out that Adi Da died back in November. What a weird and fascinating person he was.

Ignore him if you don't like him.

Seriously, I don't see how my personal response to a particular book relates to the quantity of people, bookshops and junior high schools in Japan.
Originally posted by Bosse de NageSorry, the words "flatly unwholesome" and "children" in close proximity set off an anti-Japan whinge that may have been implanted in me by a hypnotist.

DOIK!
There they are again.

BROINK!
Let's leave it at that.

Is a critique of the Japanese education system -- productive of more suicides than anywhere else -- buried somewhere in your comment? If so, please tease it out ... Korean EFL students' description of their own experiences flabbergasted me -- every child is subjected to inhumane practices (whatever that means) as a matter of course ... (At first blush I thought you were scathingly dismissing my anecdote (as if an anecdote can be dismissed!) ... whatever the case, I'm quite interested in what you have to say.)
Originally posted by Bosse de NageOne day, all the anecdotes here will be mine. I am biding my time. Everyone else will be gone at some point.

But I digress.
Unconscionable pedophilic prurience and the general jaw-dropping pornification of pre-pubescent and barely pubescent girls is par for the flloodlit practice range in Japan - not in the slightest bit deviant, but utterly mainstream - with the stuff sold in Seven-Elevens, and consumed openly by shirt-and-tied salarymen on trains.
Ali Da, eat your departed heart out and dream of the 60,000,000 Japanese members (that got away) of your unwholesome little gig down by the Cape of Naughty Nubile Hope.
Originally posted by FMFOh, right, that advanced civilisation stuff.

Just a bit of window shopping, that's all, and eight long years of never getting used to it..
