A reasonable answer to the question is 'I don't know.' Or more precisely, 'I don't know but I reject the Goddidit argument.' Far better not to know than to spin fairytales.
Personally, I'm floating the idea that the universe has always been here, in one form or another (And this includes the materials required for life).
