Politically-minded US Christians latched on to the term "religious freedom" by trial-and-error: it began to bring them judicial victories in the types of cases they had been losing before they started using the term.
But eventually the magic will wear off as more people realize what they're really doing.
I predict, as with the abolition movement, and civil rights, they will eventually drop opposition and accept it under severe societal pressure. Most Americans now support gay marriage.

everyone's views must be accepted, accept those that disagree with everyone's views
must be accepted you have become intolerant, and a hypocrite. The separation of church
state as good as that sounds has never been true, the state and church both lead people,
the people will obey both as long as they agree with one another, but as soon as someone
draws a line where they don't, they will clash.
