I do not know the answer, however there is an interesting book out there by Jonathon Kirsch ( a Jewsih author) who has written a book enittled The Harlot by the Sid eof the Road" and he takes on very difficult passages from a scholarly and historic basis. I have only read parts of it, but I have participated in an x-rated bible study at a near by Episcopal church and this book was used.
I'll put it on my to read list.

Have you tried the Jewish comments ? Bbarr would love to know. He can make fun of it in his usual condescending way when he hears about those.

You're right. I wish I knew. I haven't found any commentaries on the number.
70*7 = 490 is important.
3 is important (Trinity).
1 Christ + 12 Apostles = 13
Subtraction is important, because God subtracted a rib from Adam, so
13 - 3 = 10 is important.
Jesus divided bread in half on a few occasions, so we may divide. Thus
490/10 = 49 is important.
We need to go forth and multiply, and there were two people to start off, so 2*3 = 6 is important. Thus 49*6 = 294 is important. Finally there are 7 deadly sins, so 294/7 = 42 is the clear choice.
😛
It should be fairly obvious how to axiomatise the Bible from here 😉.

I try to learn from other perspectives and religions/denominations. I likes to look at womens too. Needless to say I am much like the Lawd as I find I don't always have a place to lay my head. But my head is where it needs to be.
I want to adress you and not no1 since you present yourself as a Southern Baptist minister on this site.

By the way dear Chicken, do you dream about numbers every now and then ?
Originally posted by ivanhoePresumably you ask because I spend a fair chunk of time thinking about maths; no, I'm afraid I'm not one of those people who is inspired in dreams or something but if I've been concentrating on something very hard, especially maths, I sometimes dream about it immediately afterwards, although not very coherently. So yes I suppose.

A wonderful thread could be started just dealing with the Sermon on the Mount.
Starting a thread is no problem, keeping it on track is ! Maybe if you would start it, it would stimulate your liberal stand-up comedian friends and other clowns to show some respect and self-restraint ..... I will not hold my breath though.
