An atheist can love and be kind and altruistic without religion and many do just that; just like many theists. So religion is not a necessary part of that.

That last statement I took to mean that some of the basic claims of religion are not false.
I like the concept of non theistic morality stemming from the well being of people, trying to arrange things so the maximum number of people live the best lives they can without suffering the fate of slavery or rule by thugs. That seems enough of a basis for me. Sam Harris has some powerful arguments in that direction.
