Self-preservation is, indeed, a considerable driving force in man's psyche.
However, despite the reality that a good portion of people who come to God are doing so on the basis of escaping Hell, those who have tasted the goodness, the God-ness of Him cease thinking in terms of Heaven or Hell: they're already in Heaven by being in a relationship with Him.
The only Hell possible is being without.
