I think modern Germany offers a case in point a) that there is such a thing as collective guilt, and b) that succeeding generations can sometimes bear a special responsibility to right previous wrongs.

To mention one current issue: Angela Merkel's policy of accepting large numbers of refugees from Syria is based, at least in part, on tacit acknowledgment that Germany itself caused a massive refugee problem within living memory. Granted, this is a political issue, not a spiritual one, but the principle could be extended to cover some previous large-scale spiritual wrong.
