So, thus far we have memory, faith, love, prediction, ambition, compassion, reason, forgiveness, drawing a line, to be like God, fallibility and hope.
It is man/woman's curiosity about the world around them that fuels their ambition/drive and search for truth.

What is the answer to the question? So far we have opinions.

For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

There are lots of contenders that are unquestionably essential, but ~ because it makes all the other attributes and capacities work, and because it is the foundation for our identity and individuality, I'll vote for...
Memory
What attribute or capacity is your favourite contender?
[One selection only, please.]
Most seek only that which "feels good" or to avoid that which "feels bad". As an example, this is what keeps Christians from "seeing" the truth about many of their beliefs. As such, they remain in the darkness.

I'm glad you caught that. Look at the verse you quoted, and while you're at it read the whole passage. The meaning of it throws your doctrine of works on its head.
Hopefully someday you'll understand what salvation actually means, but you won't until you are baptized into Christ by the Holy Ghost.
Salvation is received by faith and not by works.
Galatians 3:5-12
He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

SecondSon is a prime example of an individual for whom "it is underutilzed and therefore rarely refined".Instead of rooting out truth regarding "root out", SecondSon chose to leave half of it in darkness in an attempt to deceive. It's no surprise given that Christianity is, at least in part, built on half-truths.
