I could glibly respond "the development of one's spirituality", but I realise that this is not what you're after. Spirituality is a hard quality to pin down I find, but I don't feel it is related to any particular religion. I do feel it is a positive human quality however, and I think it is something that benefits not only the spiritually developed being themselves but also those with whom he or she interacts.
So I was wondering how you can determine that it can be deleterious to them. I have seen many people do things what I consider to be foolish because of their religion but that's their choice.
And no .. spiritual development is not always a positive human quality in my opinion.

I'm not convinced that there is such a thing as god, so obviously our definitions must differ. In my view, spiritual definition can only be a positive thing.

ok, maybe I should have said they hate the IDEA of God.
There seem to be a few atheists who do not post often in this forum who still manage to poke their heads in here long enough to post some diatribe about God or Christianity. These posts are often filled with hate. I'm not sure what drives them to do this either.
(Ok, wow, I had to google Dolores Umbridge. Very funny.)
Hate represents more investment of emotion than I feel, their are things I do hate and the level of
emotion I feel towards those things is higher than my dislike of the idea of god/s.
However I do hate some of the things done in the name of various gods.
As for Umbridge... No other Character in the Harry Potter series made my skin crawl like Umbridge,
not even Voldemort invoked that much dislike.
I think because (and I suspect everyone does) I know people like that, evil incarnate dressed in pink
cardigans with kittens on them...
