Exactly, it takes a lot more than a pumped up physique to hit home runs in the MLB with all the crap pitchers can throw these days. I am just glad that he finally broke the record, SF isn't the most exciting team to watch.

Even if Bonds cheated, he is still going to go into the record books
as the all-time HR king, so just enjoy the moment!!
And besides, whether he used juice or not, for him to hit 756 HR is an amazing accomplishment nevertheless.
I think Bonds is criticized so much because he is a jerk to the media.
That's just who he is, nobody can do anything about that.

Steroids in baseball is like using an engine in chess.
People don't use steroids in baseball. They use steroids to improve muscle mass and other things. This can assist in the playing of baseball. So can eyeglasses, laser eye surgery, Tommy John surgery, etc. etc.
At OTB tournaments, I drink coffee to keep me more alert and eat Rolaids to settle my stomach. These assist me in playing chess. Is that like using an engine? Of course not. Neither is someone using steroids "in baseball".

Originally posted by no1marauderPeople is definitely cheating (it is against the rules and it is illegal). Unlike engine use, it is actually bad for you and may tempt others to take substances which are bad for them. Instead of having Bonds getting older and slower he was hitting homeruns at a record pace. Instead of being an ordinary chess player or being a good player even people can be super great with an engine. The only difference is no one gets hurt by an engine (except some petty people's feelings)

Originally posted by myteamtrulystinksIt is against the rules, and should be. Steroids are a lot like using an engine in chess also. I may be an OK player, but if I run every move through an engine to "check" my work I'm going to play a lot better. That's what steroids do, they get you strong and help you heal so you can do better.

It SHOULD be against the rules, because there are a lot of good players who don't want to do steroids. It's not fair to them being a little better than someone else who decides they'll run the risk and take the steroids. They get the position on a team while you sit out even though without steroids you were better than they were.

The rule should be 3 strikes and you're out... and that first strike should be a dark cloud that forever hangs over the player's head. I think 3 strikes is too much, but I'm trying to be a little reasonable. Also, that first strike should be half a season, not 10 games or whatever it is now.

3rd strike should be life. Also, anywhere in stats books or Hall of Fame there should be permanent footnotes that the player tested positive for these drugs. This would cut down on the temptation players may get to use them, the punishment has to be something more than a slap on the wrist and saying "eh, almost everyone does them anyway."
It's just not fair to people who don't want to join the steroid culture. Was it SNL that had "The Steroid Olympics" skit?
