Originally posted by whodeyTo be fair, ND had lost 7 bowl games in a row before Weis and in his first two years, the Irish were 19-6 after going 11-11 the previous two under Willingham. This team in pretty awful, but I think Charley deserves another year to try and turn things around.
How did he put them back on the map? Do remember that his winning seasons were accomplished with the former coaches recruits and even with them how many bowls did he win? If I am correct, I think this is the first year the entire team are all of Charlie's recruits. Perhaps the man simply can't recruit? Had you ever considered that?
Originally posted by no1marauderWrong, the Oilers never ran the run and shoot. The Gamblers did with Jim Kelly in the USFL. Warren Moon ran a pro set offense.
From the wikipedia article for Colt Brennan:
NCAA record for most career touchdown passes (121). Achieved 2007 (tied with Ty Detmer)
NCAA single-season record for most touchdown passes, achieved in 2006 (58)
NCAA two-season record for most touchdown passes, (93 -- achieved 2005-2006)
NCAA record for passing efficiency (season), posting a 186.0 m ...[text shortened]... th 384. (2006)
EDIT: Warren Moon had some pretty good years in the pros in the Run and Shoot.
Originally posted by whodeyThat is a possibility. It could also be that his team is young and they may develop. I watched a similar thing happen in baseball at the University of Texas. Cliff Gustofson had a hugely successful program for many years. He played small ball and emphasized pitching. When he retired and Augie Garrido took over, the team foundered for three years as Augie weeded out or ran off the hold over players from Gustofson's team and got his kids into place. The UT nation was in an uproar. Then Augie's boys started to win playing Augie's style of ball and they have won a couple more National Championships and came close in a couple others. I am not saying this will be the same outcome in Charlie Weiss' case, but I wouldn't give up on him just yet.

Originally posted by no1marauderColt Brennan is proably good, but his numbers are based on a system that throws every down. (9 games and their leading rusher has 294 yards on 50 carries.. that is as close to throwing every down as you can get expecially when you are 9-0 and should sit on the ball) Of course, when you play garbage teams every week and run up the score maybe you deserve to have your QB get a concussion like he got last week.

Originally posted by poundleeMost of Hawaii's games are reasonably close as you'd know if you checked their record which you obviously couldn't be bothered with. Another know-nothing. They do pass about 70% of the time; sorry but Woody Hayes and the T-formation are dead - many college and pro teams pass at least 60% of the time in this century.

Like everything, no1 says. your assesment of hawaii's game normally being close is a complete lie. Only three games were closer than 15 points. The 63 -6 over a powerhouse like north colorado I imagine you will tell me was close unti late fourth quarter as was their 49-14, 66-10 and 48-20 games. Furthermore when you have three receivers catching more passes than your leading running back has carries and you are a passing team. Percentages in college cannot be compared to percentages in the NFL because sacks count as rushes. Therefore according to official stats he has the most carries on his team 56 for a whopping total of 56 yards and a long rush of 11 yards. Thus, they are probably over 70% for passes and over 75% if you don't count the last few minutes.
Originally posted by poundleeYeah, Brennan must have been sacked on his 7 rushing touchdowns!

Yes, Hawaii is a passing team; kudos to you for figuring that out. Unlike Michigan, Hawaii can handle a Division I-AA opponent.
Originally posted by poundleeI never said Hawaii had a balanced offense; I said they pass over 70% of the time! You're imagining things.
Hawaii has an insanely bad schedule and you would put them in a championship game.
You also indicated that Hawaii has a balanced offense and that just isn't true.
Hawaii has 3 games to go, one against a Top Twenty team and one against a Pac-10 team (the same team Ohio State played). If they win out, I'd say put them in the big game; they showed an ability last year to compete against BCS Conference opponents when they didn't have as good as a team. If they win out, they're going to a BCS game anyway. Their record this year isn't as impressive as Boise State's last year, but they are still an exciting team. Boise was robbed of a chance last year, I see no reason to deprive another 12-0 team a chance this year (if that happens).
I just don't see how you can compare a WAC team to a major conference team. I defintely have a lot more respect for what LSU, the winner of the big 12 or Oregon accomplished than Hawaii playing a truly awful schedule. Furthermore if say LSU plays and blows out Hawaii. It means that the Big 12 -Oregon winner played each other it means that they had a more impressive bowl game and entirely defeats the purpose of the BCS.
Originally posted by poundleeDid you bother the watch the bowl games last year?? The EXACT opposite happened. WAC team Boise State (which couldn't be compared to a major conference team according to you) beat Big 12 champ Oklahoma in one of the most memorable college games of all time. And the BCS championship game was an utter rout. I guess you forgot all about that.

The BCS race got even more wild after last night; Oregon became the 6th #2 and 10th top five team to lose to a non-rated opponent!
Hawaii at Nevada tonight; can the Rainbow Warriors stay unbeaten and on track for a BCS bid? It starts at 11 PM EST and since most of the other posters here think like 10 year olds, they might have to ask Mommy and Daddy if they can watch it. But they should see an interesting game if they can keep their little eyes open past their usual bedtimes.
The reason florida's win is significant is they beat an undefeated team froma major conference who beat the #2 in the nation the last week of the season and blew out a #2 team in the nation on the road. When teams that play good schedules and excel play other teams that play good teams and excel then the championship game means something. A non-BCS team as good as Bosie State probably only comes around once a decade if that. Hawaii did not play anyone good and if they play the top team in the nation, the most likely result is (1) they get blown out and (2) we never see the top team play a top team that had a quality schedule and therefore we know is good. Hawaii simply forfeits it right to play in the games when you have powerhouses like Utah St on your schedule.
Originally posted by poundleeYou can blather on all you want, but the fact remains that last year's WAC champion beat the champion of one of your "powerhouse" conferences. Obviously you're afraid it will happen again and ruin your preconceived ideas about what conferences "deserve" what.

Ohio State had Akron on its schedule, but I didn't hear you bitch about that. Hawaii's schedule gets notably tougher over its last three games; if they win out, they'll be in the top 10 in the BCS or even higher. If they are good enough to play in the BCS and unbeaten, they deserve their shot whatever "experts" like you think.
