i'm 19 and just getting into biking again. freshmen year of highschool i had broken both of my hips. running just isn't an option to try to get my body in tip top shape again. i've been biking 10 miles a day but still i want to try to get rid of some extra fat around the stomach. i'm just curious as to how many miles the bikers that are in good shape ride. also i'm a weight lifter. i'm about 173 lbs with about 8% body fat give or take.

At sub 10%, you should already have a 6 pack, so I smell a little bull in the air on this one.
back to topic
10 miles isn't alot to do much fat burning - barely a warm up. I wouldn't go out for much less than 20 - would go for a run instead, however recovering from broken hips might make me reconsider this...
You need to build up the mileage, concentrate on high cadence easy gear spinning for long durations... monitor your effort and keep it at 65-70% of your max heart rate at most.
Once established, your min ride should be about an hour, and then try to build up to include one long ride per week, say 3hrs. If you look at sportive events (100miles) then build up the time in seat / mileage in preparation, expect to spend 8hrs + in the saddle for one of these.
You sound a bit heavy for cycling too, although sounds like you should pack some power - I'm 11.5st (160lbs ish?) and would like to weigh less on the bike.
lol thanks for the info. i'm just getting into it because i want to stay healthy. my family has high cholesterol and high blood pressure. my uncle died at 52 this year and i'd like to live quiet a bit longer than that. my cholesterol is 181 which is high for someone my age. even though i've been working my ass off to try to lower it. also when i go biking i do a lot of hills because in my neighborhood there are lots of hills that seem to go on forever. ne ways thanks for your info i was planning on some long bike rides this summer too ;-)

Re: Cholestrol - exercise alone won't keep this down. You need to watch what you eat - make sure you're getting not only enough energy, but your energy is coming from the right sources.

how far can you ride in 30 mins? you be able to do at least 20km (about 12 miles) before you try a 'long ride'
24mph ave before attempting a long ride? You're having a laugh.
I cycled 100 miles on Sat ave 14.5mph, and 55 Sun ave 16.5 mph. My best for an hour would be 18 to 19 miles, never done an out an out TT over 1hr though (to confirm this).

i just started cycling again 3 months ago and it took about a month to get back to doing 20k in 30 mins.
Originally posted by trevor33Did you ride with a chain gang, how many years cycling did you do previously, are you recovering from both hips being broken? Your advice is not very focused towards someone looking to start or improve their cycling after injury. It'd be the same as me telling a beginner runner to not go beyond 5 miles until they can run sub 6 min miles for the entire distance. Would put most people off trying.

well 3 years ago i broke my right hip in soccer and played on it for 4 more weeks until i couldn't walk. then 2 months later we took second at the soccer state tournament. right after that baseball started and i broke the left hip while hitting the ball. the muscle tore the bone off both times. i am able to do a lot of excercise on it and i wont feel it. i have a very high pain tolerance. for instance i ran 2 miles uphill at about a 45 degree angle with my cousin and then ran down it. i was fine but felt a burn. i was unable to run for over a week. biking has less stress but hills have a way of putting pressure on them. i know my eating habbits affects my cholesterol as well but i am already eating healthy. i eat complex carbs in the morning and throughout the day i'll have something that has more carbs and then quiet a bit of protein. inbetween meals i eat fruits and at night i have about 2 cups of broccoli and i avoid a lot of sweets and such. i'm planning on going on some 30 to 40 mile bike rides this summer. the other day after work i went for a fast bike ride before a workout but nothing too much because my leggs were tired from standing in place for 6 hrs. i rode 4 miles uphill in 16 minutes. i think thats a pretty good pace i could have gone for longer but it was near dark when i started ne ways. thanks for the suggestions.

thanks for the info i just rode my bike for 2 hrs. the first 40 mins were 20 minutes to work and 20 mins home from work. 15 minute break then rode again for an hour and 20 minutes. man it felt good. how much calories is usually burned in an hour biking? any guesses?
