I can't believe I just wrote that last sentence, true though it may be. If you saw the contest today, everyone who was in the running was separating the dog from the bun, dipping the bread in water and gyrating while they ate. That's all Kobayashi's influence.
Anyway, I wouldn't call him an athlete, but if you're judging greatness by impact on a sport, you've got to at least consider him. Dude can seriously eat...

And I disagree that it's gluttony. To me that implies eating to excess for the sheer pleasure of eating. These guys eat to compete. I don't think most of them eat like this more than a few times per year.
