I agree - after 26 moves any strong player would have been resigned.

I would also add that inability to exploit black mistakes 5...Nf6? and 6...Nxe4? is illustrative.

Well, probably not on here but I would in blitz. I have played on a piece down from time to time if I think there are swindling chances - I can kind of see why he played on there since Nc3 was an unexpectedly crushing move.
Come to think about it, most of blacks moves that game were of a high quality....

I agree, 7. Rf1-e1 would've been my choice.

Only group 34 remains undecided. Looks like it might take a while.

Looks like it is going to finish soon now. Round 2 is going to be VERY tough 😵

even though one player is on no time and the other has a few hours it might go on for some time, since rthe automatic time-out only kicks in after 2 days of inactivity I think.

We are talking about Game 4445258

Now there is no time left to either opponent.

But to anser your question: maybe they just agreed not to take the skull or they feel it to be sportmanship.

And in this situation (when both clocks ran down) it's difficult to argue that time was part of the game, wouldn't it?

Agreed. Time is no longer part of this game. I can't see how white could click the skull after being saved of a time out.
Sportmanship is one thing between two players but this affect 907 other players. This game could last forever...
There is a glitch in the rules, Championship 2008 may be over only in 2010...

There should be no skulls, no discretion, no recriminations, no false sense of sportmanship - in all competitive games, just make the damn timeouts immediate and automatic. If you run out of time, you lose. Simple.

Absolutely. Why bother having time controls if you are not going to enforce them ?

Maybe this is worth to suggest a vote by the members of the site?

I think I read the U.S. Correspondence Championships for 1997 and 1998 were only recently decided. Granted that is mail-based and this is instant correspondence...

But I also agree about the skulls. There should be none. In an OTB tournament as soon as the flag drops, your're done.

I agree, but doesn't this time out after two days? I thought that's what was supposed to happen in tournaments. Or did this change?
