It seems to me that under 20 moves is by far not enough to guarantee checkmate...
Lets say we use Grampy Bobby's guide above:
I am currently rated 1642. If I were to play an 1842 player, I would surely be able to hold on for 19 moves... After 19 moves even if my opponent is up material or has positional advantage, it is unlikely he would be abl ...[text shortened]... he weaker player, even with the greatest of difference margins in ratings.
Thoughts anyone?

Only 5 to go. What ratings will you apply, Trev? Highest ever, highest in last x days, tournament entry rating, current rating (you'll have to be fast setting up the handicaps if you pick this one).

i got the idea for this when someone challenged me to a game but knowing i would beat him we put a bet on me winning within 20 moves. i won in 19 but instead of the boring games we usually have and me ending up winning easily it was a really fun and interesting game.
i would like to organize a tournament with the same rules here. of course all games would ...[text shortened]... dit: btw both subs and non-subs can play as only 2 games will be playing at any one time.

it won't be a duel....the higher rated player will play as white in a one game playoff. if 34 moves are set for a win and the checkmate is achieved in 34 or less moves the higher rated player will advance anything else will result in the lower rated player winning.
remember even if the game is lost the higher rated player most win by checkmate so keep playing on.
all games are unrated.
i can't remember the name but it won't be random pairings. the other one with 24 vs 12...23 vs 11 etc. in the ratings table. to ensure there's a gap in the ratings.
the min amount of moves will be 20 and the max 50, for every 20 rating points difference 1 point is taken away from the 50 to achieve the number of moves set for the higher player to win in.
if someone is unable to start their next round for whatever reason the person who they beat in the last round will advance. just as if the person had timed out in his/her previous game.
as there's 24 players in the tourney the final will consist of 3 player with the winner having to beat each of them to win the tourney. a win for each player will result in another 3 games being played until a winner is known.
everyones rating will be decided by tournament entry rating however this might differ for some players who have for whatever reason a rating below their true ability. everyones rating will be fair.
all ratings will be rounded to the nearest 20, for example my rating is 1611 so will be rounded up to 1620. 0-9 rounded down and 10-19 rounded up.
new ratings will be used at the start of each round. as people may improve a lot in between rounds or in fact have an inflated rating when the tournament starts.
games will be 3/7 but i ask as this is a friendly tourney not to take a time out if given the chance...at least for a couple of days....i just want it to run as smoothly and as quickly as possible but also want the player who can greatly handle his or her handicap to win.
assuming we get the final 2 players soon i'll start the tourney in about a weeks time.
i think that covers everything...anymore questions just ask.
good luck everyone.
