What about Frank Zappa and his theories of 'the Big Note' and 'conceptual continuity'?

OK, a secondary catagory: Most Pretentious Book About An Artist's Work...

Ben Watson's The Negative Dialectics Of Poodle Play on the works of Frank Zappa.

Exquisitely pretentious and far-fetched. To the point of sheer genius.

The thing about Zappa was, even though he talked a lot of zomg he knew it was zomg and that makes it as much a joke as a special, secret piece of knowledge. I don't think anyone could consider Zappa pretentious, he did it for the lulz. Seriously and with the utmost detail, but lulz nonetheless.

Those who wrote about, or surrounded him (Steve Vai is a good example) cannot always be said to have got the joke, though.

I wish you hadn't limited it to rock and pop.

Well - sex, drugs, and pretension are the norm in classical music, Kinda hard to narrow it down.
