The hearts and minds will be won, and the taliban will fade away ...., only a matter of time , but my heart goes out to all those young brave soldiers from all the coalition countries fighting to stop global terrorism !!

Of course, I don't argue with the notion that they will eventually be defeated, it is just that sometimes it takes many life times before this occurs.
In the Iraq war it seemed that when the US invaded it was the lesser of two evils. but then there was the Abu Grabe prison, and Guantanamo bay, I think these caused huge damage to campaigns in the middle east as they could no longer be seen as liberators.
I remember hearing ages ago Baywatch was the one of the most popular TV programs in the region. If this is the way of life being sold (although off course inaccurate) religious fundamentalists just can't rival it with there dogma , people want that kind of freedom of there own accord.
The UK news has payed much attention to the Afghan elections, to say we are here for the good of the country, i think this is true. But If the grim prison tactics used in Iraq are in use then they will be turned on. It seems Afghanistan has lots of well armed militias who offer much less hope then a democratic state... but more then Abu grabe for sure...

if [nuking Afghanistan is] the only way, then so be it.
