how do little politicians get to be big politicians?

wheeling, dealing, lying, trading off favors, skewing votes so the corps will continue to provide them campaign funds, going rough or soft as needs be, whatever it takes to climb the political ladder.

if they DON'T, they don't get to be big politicians.

and you're trusting these guys with your MONEY?!?!

LOL! That's the question you should be asking yourself, considering you are so ready to accuse other countries you know nothing about of being corrupt.

I love hearing a communist using the phrase "my money" and railing against capitalism in the same breath. Oh, the irony.

Blame it all on capitalism if you want shav, but the real culprit is shakily financed government debt that is 120 percent of GDP. That's socialism buddy. And bailing out the banks with tax payer money? That's socialism too.

My oh my. Please give a single example of a socialist state success that occured without taxing "Capitalism".

Give up? I wonder why. Simpletons always see utopia without the road and journey that gets the cart and wagon to the promised land. And you sir... are as simple as simple gets.

btw... how are you enjoying those dirt roads in your beloved village? Ever thought of trying to pave them? It will take a bit of effort and work. Oh. I forgot. You need others to do it for you. Oh well. Enjoy the pot holes and may your donkey live long and never fart in your face on your way to the revolution.

Well, how are you so certain that corruption is not as bad in Portugal as it would seem from CPI? Surely you must base this on actual data rather than just nationalist sentiment?

Yes, I worked, lived, studied, follow politics, follow the news, know several people involved in politics, etc.

Google scholar shows me papers that show income inequality is overwhelmingly due to education inequality.

What do YOU have apart from prejudice and obvious ignorance?

Just the nationalist sentiment then, it seems.

I just find it very odd that you would denounce my claim that Portugal has relatively high corruption compared to other Eurozone members based on mere personal experience. I mean, I follow the news, live and work here, but I wouldn't say I can accurately estimate the extent of corruption in the Netherlands based on that.

Neither is socialism. The banks would be owned by the government in a socialist country so there'd be no need to bail them out nor would they have been likely to have done the reckless speculation for profit that should have brought down the private banks in this crisis.

No, I said we are not a "dodgy corrupt regime" and we shouldn't have been allowed in the Eurozone. This is a strong, and wrong claim. You argued that income inequality is due to corruption, I've responded that income inequality is overwhelmingly due to inequality in education.

From there you started with the sad accusations of nationalism because you had no answer. In fact, the only reason you put Portugal alongside Italy regarding corruption is prejudice. Same as the sad individuals that lump African or Latin American countries in one big basket, you do the same for Southern European countries. Moreover, your refusal in admitting you actually don't know anything about corruption in Portugal (beyond an index that you agreed is biased by prejudice) seems weird.

"Accurately"? More weasel words. What is an "accurate" estimate of the extent of corruption? There isn't any.
