Austrialia has banned under 16’s from using social media. It becomes law in 2026. And companies like facebook and instagram will receive harsh penalties if they don’t do their best to block kids from using their platforms.
Is it a good thing, banning under 16’s from using social media?
Is it right to burden companies with the above mentioned obligation?
Are the discussion forums on RHP considered social media?
@shavixmir saidLOL - it might be a better idea if the over 16's were banned

@shavixmir saidOf course it won't work, any 10-year-old knows how to get around it. It's politicking, we have an election due in May.

Better idea, banning social media altogether. [ ducks down behind the wall ]
@shavixmir saidthey will probably add a "are you over X years? You promise to tell the truth when you answer" prompt

Anything more will open a fukton of disgusting government spying. You disable existing social media accounts for anyone born after a certain year. What next, you spy accounts that say they were totally born in 1970 for mentions about how second grade is? See if they say how mean teachers or parents are?
It's gross
If parents don't want their children on social media, it's on them to keep them off it.
@shavixmir saidThis is what will be an interesting outcome of all this - how will they define social media? You could argue that you use nearly any platform for just private messaging, for example.

This seems like a sensible idea, but will be nightmare to implement.
@Zahlanzi saidI don’t know if I agree with you.

There’s loads of research concluding that social media is detremental to children’s health.
Stooped backs, for example. Spreading nudes and fake nudes, bullying, indoctrinating, etc.
Children (and maga supporters… haha&hellip😉 are extremely susceptable to addiction and many sites use techniques which promote it.
The government does have a role in protecting children. Especially if the parents don’t or can’t carry their responsibility.
I have no idea how something like this ban could be enforced. I’m pretty sure there will be plenty of workarounds.

you misunderstood me. I absolutely agree that's true. What i find disgusting is the government doing the banning and all the ways they will or will not disclose in how they plan to enforce the ban.
Parents should absolutely control their children access to social media.
"I’m pretty sure there will be plenty of workarounds."
The workarounds existing is little comfort in the face of loss of freedom and invasive government interference
"The government does have a role in protecting children. Especially if the parents don’t or can’t carry their responsibility."
Only in cases of clear harm.
Like for example how they step in when there is abuse. How would you like instead mandatory interviews monthly to see if there is abuse. For everyone.
"I have no idea how something like this ban could be enforced"
That's the main thing you should ask when anything is proposed
Most Australians are pretty laid-back when it comes to government interference, because we know we can get it reversed if it turns out to be a bad idea. Personally I think it's far too late, kids are already telling their parents what to do, from brand-name clothing and toys to the family food choices and leisure activities. Kids are future adults and are just as capable of running/ruining their own lives as we were. Perhaps social media is just natural selection in action.
I have no skin in the game, I'm 80 and childless, but it seems to me that most kids are turning out just fine. I expect the politicians will abandon the legislation when they can't figure out how to make it work.
@shavixmir saidAn exercise in political posturing and virtue signalling which will be impossible to enforce and will not have the backing of many parents as the kids will revolt domestically and get around it easily. Social media platforms will put a few extra “clicks” and “tick boxes” in place and sit back and laugh at the sheer stupidity of clueless career politicians.

@Russ saidThe smart thing to do is to start with the big guns, Facebook, Instagram, TicToc, and impose controls, pentalties there first. The content on some of these social media sites are x-rated. Messaging only apps should be fine.
