Why does the government protect your house and property? See how tragic you dependents sound to us?

People pay taxes.
There are problems within society.
People vote for governments to solve said problems.
If people don’t like the political solution, they vote in another government the next time.

That’s politics. That’s why the government wants to lower debt: a political solution to a problem; perhaps the cause behind a problem.
