I spend my days making a couple hundred bucks an hour when I actually work and since I'm ain't greedy or pretentious this allows me plenty of time to play online chess. I guess I'll just have to learn to live with the pity of "normal" people.

So... is it time to set aside this particular misconception? Are good chess players REALLY smarter than the average person... or are good players JUST good chess players?[/b]
Bridge players as a group are smarter than chess players as a group.

Relativity. Are chess players as smart as ... "What?"
I'm about half as smart as Einstein. He played chess only as a last resort. If there was not a violin to play or a person to meet.
I have often wondered about "IQ". I came to the conclusion a few years back that "smartness" is probably an "accumulation of natural and learned talent that add up to an ability to test new ideas in several ways."
Language + Math + Spatial Awareness + Time Cognative Awareness + Body Control + Short Term Memory + Factual Integration + Mid Term Memory + Long Term Memory + Short/Mid/Long Term Thought and Memory Retrieval + Associative Awareness + Ability To Discard + Attentive Devotion Quotient + Relational Accumulative Ability
Don't worry if you can't find this on the net anywhere. These are just my categories that I have invented to describe parts of "intelligence".
I think that Chess players probably are "deformed" in some ways. They have an amazing ability in the "Spacial Relations" and "Memory Retrieval" areas but are alarmingly lacking in the "Factual Integration" and "Ability To Discard" areas.
Maybe. And this is the key. I don't have the intellectual capital to make any of these ideas anything more than "interesting" or "silly".
Alas.
Originally posted by gambit3I think there's no question that playing chess requires deductive reasoning capacity and some degree of creative thought, but I've actually encountered people (especially on RHP) who react negatively to anyone who questions the opinion of a high ranking player.
Both Fischer and Kramnik have been asked what skills are needed to play chess well. A person's I.Q. was not a part of their answer. I do not remember thier answer, but a good memory (Doh) and problem solving skills were in both of thier answer.
The insinuation (and some people have said it outright) is that higher ranking players are smarter than we are and we should just accept what they say. I've also noticed a number of players who are painfully detailed in describing their level of education, which seems a little odd given that no one talks at length about their personal lives or their careers... why SPECIFICALLY their education? Is it to imply that they're good chess players, or that they believe themselves to be AS SMART as a good chess player?
I'm not trying to question anyone's intelligence. I just think that there's an interesting group dynamic at play, which seems to be based largely upon the perception that the higher the rank, the smarter the player. I've seen several trends among the members here, but that certainly isn't one of them.

There is a loose correlation between chess ability and IQ, but it's not absolute. A lot of very intelligent people are mediocre chess players,no matter how hard they study, and some dull-normal types can be quite good at chess with a small amount of effort. Among the top-notch players however, there is no doubt that it takes a superior intellect. (excluding idiot-savants, and I don't know of any in the chess world, has anyone here heard of one?)
