What about JamesWoodley? He seems boderline retarded when he writes, but his rating keeps improving. Oh, I forgot - he's a weaselly little cheat. That explains it.
I've seen a few posts by higher-rated players (1600+) that seem to demonstrate a complete incomprehension of syntax and whatever 15-grunt alphabet they use. I've also seen some posts by low ...[text shortened]... ess rating on this site and their abilities with the written word, it's anything but clear.
Many women are physically stronger than men; that does not invalidate the point that, in general, men are stronger than women.

that is the only valid relationship that can be seen here. whatever theory you're putting forth here is unfounded rubbish.

Isn't that what a game of chess is all about? So isn't it reasonable to assert that someone who has exhibited a high level of "chess skills" has also shown a fairly high degree of intelligence?
Originally posted by no1marauderMy dictionary.com defines intelligence as the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge. I suppose it could be argued that someone with a high intelligence could improve their chess skills at a higher rate and therefore become a good chess player in less time than someone with a lesser intelligence beginning to learn at the same time. But to generalise and say that the higher the rating, the smarter the person is horribly inaccurate and, frankly, unintelligent.

Besides that would make you much more intelligent than me. And I tend to think that you're not necesarilly much more intelligent - just much, much, much older. 😀
I guess I didn't really answer your question directly.

Yes. If you are an IM or a GM, it would be pretty safe to say that you have a high level of intelligence. After all, this isn't checkers we're playing.

What is so controversial?

I think one can generalise in that there is certainly a correlation between chess rating and IQ. Look at the posts from the people with the higher ratings, and compare with the posts from those people with the lower ratings (native English speakers).

There is a loose correlation between chess ability and IQ, but it's not absolute. A lot of very intelligent people are mediocre chess players,no matter how hard they study, and some dull-normal types can be quite good at chess with a small amount of effort. Among the top-notch players however, there is no doubt that it takes a superior intellect. (excluding idiot-savants, and I don't know of any in the chess world, has anyone here heard of one?)
