Probably to send you a text with a confirmation code. All kind of accounts do so now.

Why is your phone number such a big secret?

EDIT: In your FB profile you can make your phone number "Only Me" for "Friends" only or "Public".
Nobody likes being put on lists of robot cold call spam advertising

Some of us old.timers remember when they used to put all phone numbers in a big book and drop it off at everyone's doorstep! Crazy, huh!

There's Caller ID, spam filters and voice mails these days

I remember those. It was optional if you wanted your number in there. Those books also don’t use AI to constantly analyze your behavior so each number comes with a psychological analysis like Facebook does.

Voice mail and screening calls takes too much time to process just like junk snail mail or spam email.

Confirmation of what? They do not know what my phone number is. How would they know it is me?

I don't get a cell signal much where I live. Sometimes I have to drive up the road to get a cell signal. City people just assume everyone gets a cell signal like they do. I live in a rural area.

I also do not want them to sell my phone number so I get unwanted calls.
Apple does the same thing with credit cards in their app store. I cannot get any app from them without giving them my credit card info. I will never buy an iphone again.

Twitter does not do that. That is why I am complaining about facebook. Nobody has to put up with that BS.

Facebook might sell phone numbers to the DNC if they can determine what political party you likely identify with. That way they can avoid wasting money contacting republicans for example.

They'd know your phone number IF you gave it to them, wouldn't they? Then they'd probably send a text to that number with a pass code for a two step verification of your identity.

I mean if you're so paranoid you don't want to give out your phone number, don't. To me, it's no BFD; if Facebook wants my number they can have it - I usually don't answer the few calls I get from numbers I don't know anyway.

But if it was not me an imposter could give them any number. Then the imposter could have complete access and hijack my account. What verification?

You mean future verification that it is either me or an imposter that hijacked my account. Giving them a phone number does not verify it is me. They would have to already have my number to verify it is me. DUH!

Are you really this much of an idiot? IF you are communication with FB NOW and they've asked YOU for YOUR phone number, how could anyone else give it to them?

This is laughable paranoid lunacy.

No they would not. I just explained to you they do not have my phone number to verify it is me. They would be sending a pass code to the imposter, not me.

This is not complicated. Are you retarded?
If they don't already have my phone number they cannot possibly verify my identity. Quite simple. Have a child explain it to you. Maybe then you will understand.

All they had to do was require my phone number to create the account. Instead, they are giving a possible imposter the chance to access my account while denying me access to the account.

This is laughable that you do not understand such a simple concept.
Have a child explain it to you. I'm tired of trying to convince you of the obvious simplicity of it all. You clearly do not want to see the obvious.

I don't get a cell signal where I live. How many times do I need to explain that to your mentally handicapped brain? You would have people believe I am paranoid for not wanting to drive to get a cell signal for the pass code and come back home to find out the webpage has expired because it took too much time.

You are a citiot. In your feeble little mind everyone in the country can receive a cell signal because you can. Typical citiot thinking.

You're a paranoid nut case; maybe you should bury your cell phone and live in a secluded hut like the Unabomber.

Perhaps like me they suspect that you work on a troll farm and are trying to make it more difficult fir you to work multiple accounts

It’s a private club. They can set any entrance requirements or conditions they please, however stupid they seem to you. You have no entitlement to join. If you don’t want to jump through their hoops, go somewhere else.
