move out? where i'd pay on average $600 more a month for rent for a smaller place?
no thanks. you obviously don't know boston too well.
Originally posted by jlillyThe Walther is a nice pocket pistol, but the .380 is barely capable as a defensive stopper. It is true that if you will not carry a larger caliber then better the PPK than nothing. Fortunately, there are many 9mm (heavier bullets, more velocity and muzzle energy), as well as .40 S&W, and .45 ACP which aren't much bigger and bulkier than the Walther PPK.

i know the .45 is much more powerful than the .380acp, right? i'm looking for QUALITY here not so much power. i'm 5'4 and have small hands. I've shot the .45 before and its really fun! but my hands _do get pretty sore, especially the skin webbing area (?) between thumb and pointer. ...[text shortened]... ould be better. but mostly i need a handgun for the home as i live in the scary ghetto 😉
Check out the Taurus Millenium series, which comes in all those calibers, and has more magazine capacity in each than does the Walther. They are also DAO a simple gun to operate, while still being very safe. There are other DOA out there including quite a few Glock models, and the S&W Sigma in a variety of calibers. One of the other drawbacks to the Walther is that it is a double action, single action, that is the first shot is fired with a long double action pull which cocks and releases the hammer. After the first shot is fired, the gun chambers the next round, and cocks, so subsequent rounds are fired with a much shorter, and much more effortless squeeze. The transition from first to subsequent rounds takes lots of practice, and the chances of accidental discharge after the first round is increased.
If you are serious about self defense in lethal force situations, get a serious gun. I'd own a Walther as a collector's piece only. You may experience some difficulty and expense getting a properly fitted holster for this weapon as well, whereas some of the other choices I mentioned you will find many sources for leather or Kydex holsters as well as magazine carriers.
Your hand size would say stay away from 1911 .45 ACP guns like the Kimber pistols. I say this although I carry a Paraordnance P14/45. Weight, concealment, and potentially recoil can be issues.
If you can try your choices on the range, and don't buy a pistol until you have found the necessary stuff like holsters and mags for it.
As to not aiming shotguns, that is a myth. The idea of a shotgun as a home defense or tactical short range weapon, is to put a heavy load of lead into the target. You have to aim at the target, to get a slug, or all of the pellets of double or triple ought buck into the target. Birdshot in a wide pattern isn't going to be an effective stopper in a lethal force situation.
Oh, on the matter of liability, don't worry about loading jacketed hollow points. Just make sure to use factory ammo, not reloads. If involved in a shooting incident, exercise you right to remain silent until represented by legal council. Do not use inferior ammunition fearing liability. Better sued or prosecuted, than buried.
Good luck.

Originally posted by AThousandYoungThe Colt .45 was developed in 1911 forthe U.S. Army, because during its campaign against the Moros in Philippines, their trusty .38 revolver to be incapable of stopping attackers. The soldiers would shoot the attackers and they just kept coming. With a larger bullet, a lot more energy is transfered, and will knock you on your butt. Imagine if there was a gun that could shoot needles. What impact would it have? Not much. It would probably pass right through you, with out even slowing you down. A .45 will stop you!
I'm not that experienced with guns, but my understanding is that bigger bullets don't help kill humans better, but instead simply decrease rate of fire and accuracy.
As far as accuracy, if your talking about pistols and self-defence, then most of the time people only shoot within 15 ft.

Never heard of any 1911 with "firing pin issues". Some n00b told you that. Kimber's are top of the line, but check out Taurus 1911's , they're about 1/2 the cost of a Kimber and just as good. If it's for home defense, go with the .45, if you plan on carrying it, get the Walther. A .380 in your hand is better than a .45 at home in your nightstand drawer. Concealed carry permits are much easier to get than they once were in many states.

If "pretty" is still a consideration for her, then I still recommend one of these:

Just took mine out shooting today and jeez I like it, after 1000 rounds it has yet to jam and it gobbles up every +P Hollow Point I can find. It is my nightstand gun, but looks good when wearing a Tuxedo. (Or pretending to wear one)
"Bond.....James Bond".......takes a big drag off a cigarette and throws a hundred pound chip out for the next hand of baccarat.
