We don't see anything peculiar in taking care of our own protection. At least to the extent that we can lawfully do it.
To answer your question... "People who are afraid" dare not "risk" the responsibility of defending themselves. They are of the sheep mentallity. "Hey! I'm a sheep. The dog and the shepherd are in charge of my safety! Hey. I'm a sheep. All good sheep are like me. Only wolves are not good sheep."
