Insightful.
To which point(s) do you disagree? If it's just to my last point about predictable responses do not need to be expressed, then ok, have your say, tell us all how bad and a jerk this guys was.
Now, if you've posted your "reaction" to this guy's actions, what are we supposed to do? Shall we all nod and chime in with our comments about how mu ...[text shortened]... this was a bad thing? Ok, now we can move on with our lives."
Is that how it goes?
My initial question was how could this happen?
How can this have happened? It's hard for me to understand how the Mum didn't question her husband.
No, I don't need you to validate my morals or to agree that this was a heinous crime.

How it happened in irrelevant. To discuss it is voyeuristic at best. Gossipy for sure.
Leave the victims alone.

I'm sure there will be a movie made about this so all the voyeurs and gossip queens can tune in to get all the gory details.
😞
Maybe neighbours need to be a little nosier and notice things right under their noses.
maybe society has become a little inward, people are staying in, watching tv and ignoring their neighbours.
Maybe if we just brush this under the carpet this will happen again.

Three years ago I phoned the social services to report something about a boy in my childs class who had said something to me about his home life that scared me. If he'd said it to you you'd have thought calling the social was gossiping wouldn't you?

It would be gossipy if the rest of us on this RHP site decided to talk about it after it happend amongst ourselves.
Huge difference.

Maybe if we just brush this under the carpet this will happen again.
If you think that by discussing on RHP what happened to these people will somehow ensure that it doesn't happen to someone else, then I suggest you are exaggerating the influence RHP forums have on world events.

If someone had raised a concern about this family perhaps this wouldn't have happened. If you saw something that bugged you and maybe you didn't know why it bugged you but it stuck in your mind like a shoe in a wood or something would you ignore it?

It just would have taken one person to bother to findout what was going on. One person to raise alarm about this family and things would have been different. Can't you see that?

Evidently, it was acceptable in this man's home. Also, Mormons on the Arizona, Utah, Nevada border do this sort of thing all the time. The polygamist cult in West Texas was charged with committing similar acts. Are are you saying then that we don't have to the right to do whatever we want, with whomever we want, whenever we want?
Where are the mods when you need them?

Your statements are obvious. The answer to your question is "OF COURSE!"
This is the point. The answers are so obvious it isn't even worth discussing. Of couse if someone had noticed or done something then maybe it wouldn't have happend.
We don't need to discuss the obvious do we?

The question wasn't : How could this have been prevented ?
The replies here (example the one quoted ) gives me the impression that most here were trying to answer the wrong question 🙂
The problem for me, is the question on hand is too vague with
no clear set terms of reference.
"Thing like this" : What things are we talking about ?
Could it be things that are similar in nature that has essentially
a similar result ?
So if you ask me, fellow posters, are you all busy using fuzzy logic
in trying to answer a fuzzy question 😀

This isn't Pro- of Con- the argument of this thread; I simply point out that movies do NOT always get made, revealing all the gory details

How could I have put the question better?
...Is there really such a thing as an evil person?
...How is it that terrible things can happen where you'd expect someone to notice?
...How did so many people miss the signs and let this awful thing happen?
What do you think?
