The salaries of my state (California) governor and legislators have been cut 23% in the past 4 years. They are still at or near the top in the country, but we are a big complex state and economy, and if a country, would have about the 8th highest GDP in the world, bigger than Russia's in 2012.

Edit: Here is the highest AVERAGE teacher pay I could find locally. The highest paid? Your guess is better than mine. The 210 is the number of teachers in the district.

I believe our governor makes about $165,000. There are other public officials, like college presidents, making much more.

Surely a necessary consequence of democracy is that people can vote for proposals that benefit them personally?
The intent of a republic is to keep government from favoring particular discreet groups, who it was recognized would seek personal advantage.

As I said, also take into consideration number of years of service.

Well, maybe you should collect signatures for an initiative, if you have an initiative process in your state. Democracy in action.

Sometimes it isn't the system that stifles the idea. Sometimes it's the merit of the idea that stifles the idea.

Now in both places courts have reversed those initiatives. Perhaps the originating democracy was an overreach, and then perhaps the reversal by the courts was, or was it protecting a minority from the will of the majority?
