No, Douglas was a good pick, I have to admit, but it is a Hispanic 🙂

Not César Chávez (sorry DSR).

Is this one of those questions where we have to call every one who lives in the North and South American continents an "American"? If so I'm going with Castro 🙂

LOL

Raúl or Fidel?

😛

P.S. Nah, here I'm refering to Hispanic in the way it is used in the U.S.

LOL. No. He's disgusting. But I'm trying to guess who YOU think would be a great American. No offense. Obviously I don't know you well enough, partly I'm sure because our last conversation pretty much ended with you calling me, ironically, a gringo racist.

At least we agree on Lincoln, King, and Hernandez. Anyway, I give up.

LOL, we must work on your mixup with Spanish vs. English phrasing, i.e. in Spanish it would be 'gringo racista' and in English 'racist gringo', but not the other way 🙂

It's Dennis Chavez.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Chavez

From another site, the one I provided above, you can read:

After World War II because of the discrimination practices Hispanic Veterans were encountering, Senator Dennis Chávez made front page news when he stated that:

We are "Americans" when we go to war, and when we return, we are "Mexicans".

Mr Dennis Chávez was elected to the House of Representatives in 1930, and to the Senate in 1935, where he served until his death on November 18, 1962.

In a time when his ethnic origin was much more of a trouble than it is today (it still is, IMHO), he stood up. There are many things I dislike about the U.S., but there is an equal amount of things I like, and Chavez' phrase above embodies what I believe is one the best features of the U.S.
