In the context of the U.S. government's desperation to increase its net revenue
in the least painful way possible, I present you all with a proposal: increase the
federal gasoline tax by $0.0009 per gallon.

You're no doubt laughing at the thought, but hear me out. I can't remember
the last time I saw a gasoline price that wasn't listed to nine tenths of a cent,
and I also can't remember the last time I stopped to care about that last nine
tenths of a cent, either. So, who would really care if prices were listed out to
ninety-nine hundredths of a cent? And it's not as though the increase would
actually have a noticeable effect on your "average Joe" at the gas pump: one
souce I checked found the average per capita motor gasoline consumption in
the U.S. in 2005 to be roughly 430 gallons. Using that figure, a $0.0009 per
gallon tax increase would cost the average consumer an extra $0.39 per year.

Okay, so would the price difference actually matter for the federal government,
you might ask? Yes, to a small degree, at least.

One source I checked says that in 2010, the U.S. consumed approximately 139
billion gallons of gasoline. Using that figure, a $0.0009 tax increase per gallon
would generate approximately $125 million in additional revenue. No, I don't
expect to pay off our national debt with that amount any time soon, but I
would argue that it's still not anything to scoff at. The 2010 FY budget for the
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration--a subdivision of the Department of
Transportation--was $550 million, so this hypothetical tax increase would have
covered 23% of the FMCSA's budget.

Now, would I really mind seeing Congress raise the federal gasoline tax by
$0.10 per gallon? No, but I figure all hell would break loose at the prospect of
raising the tax 54% ($0.184 to $0.284). So, why not go for the extra $0.0009
per gallon for the time being?

So the government's response to the debt crisis: Lowering the social security tax 2%. So now what with SS? going from 6% to 4%, doesn't that mean future retirees will also be getting the same cut in their retirement?

What the hell is going on with congress, facing a 15 trillion dollar national debt, about 50,000 bucks for every man, woman and child in the US and republicans keep bribing American taxpayers to keep themselves in office to accomplish exactly NOTHING?

How in the hell do they expect to get rid of the national debt, the INTEREST right now runs into hundreds of billions of dollars a year, and they are going to pay for that by lowering payroll taxes? Do they think Americans are so stupid they think getting 20 bucks a week more money is going to pay for all the spending caused by the republican party?

Remember Bush Jr's incentive plan? Everyone forgets how he gave away 3/4 of a trillion dollars, so when Obama does likewise, Obama is the pariah. Are we supposed to just forget half of that Bush so-called incentive just disappeared and NOBODY knows where 400 billion dollars went?

You can bet SOMEBODY knows EXACTLY where that money went and it for sure wasn't to help the average taxpayer. Do they really think we are that stupid not to notice crap like that? This government, congress and house, I think will go down in history as the absolutely worse in the last 200 years.

They should increase the tax by about $1/gallon over a three year period (making the total increase $3/gallon). This would strongly encourage cleaner car engines, and the revenue can be used to patch up the crumbling infrastructure.

Oh, so it's the Republican party's fault is it? In fact, Newt Gingrich is the last Speaker of the House to pass a balanced budget. The Dems could not even pass a budget from 2008 to 2010 when they had full power in Congress.

Mwhahahaha. You kids are hilarious!!

$125m in revenue is hardly worth the time and effort to propose and pass the bill.

Ha!

If you think that the high level of federal spending right now is principally a result of actions by the Republican party, you simply don't have the foggiest notions as to what it is that you're talking about.

Are you kidding? You pick out one statement and comment on that? You clearly gloss over the fact that Bush Jr. gave out 3/4 of a trillion dollars, half of which is totally gone, down the drain of no return because there was no accountability to any of that money? We sure could use 400 billion dollars right now. At least Obama's packages had accountability. You think all the crap going on in congress right now is the Dem's fault? It takes two to tango. Just how in the hell are we supposed to bring down the 15 TRILLION in national debt by cutting payroll and SS taxes? Tell me that mr. cynical.

I have made about 60K a year for decades and now my federal tax is coming out to about 9 percent. What the hell is going on with that? I don't mind paying taxes if it seems to be accomplishing anything but this is putting a knife right in the middle of the budget. Tell me how reducing payroll taxes isn't a bribe pure and simple to gather votes for republicans? I think you are going to be sadly disappointed come election time.

There is NO Income Tax Law in America, it's all a sham and no Citizen needs to fill out and return a 1040 form.

Look it up and find out for yourselves. Tens of thousands don't pay and it is totally legal.

First you blame ONLY "W" and the Republicans and then say it takes two to tango? Your ideas are incohenent.

I never defend "W", or had you not noticed? To me Barak Obama is "W"'s mini me. To people like you, Barak Obama is a knight in shining armor who has come to save us from the evil Republican party.

Sad. Taking on the IRS is literally suicidal.

For anyone to take on the IRS, they need Moses, a rod, and a sea to cross hoping they come chasing you across the sea bed. Other than that your screwed.

You still haven't even had the nerve to comment on the missing 400 billion. Or is that to minor a subject even to be worthy of comment? That was a republican boondoggle. They love to give money away to the rich. Funny how it is the poor are poorer now and the rich are measurably richer thanks to their republican supplicants.

Ahem, just wondering if your tax attorney will be able to deduct the gas tax on your 1040 schedule A? Mine will. What a crazy guy he is.

LOL.

People like you force the IRS to waste lots of time to rebut moronic contentions like these, but rebut it they do.

Thoroughly.

Go. Don't file your income tax returns. I hope they catch you. Then have fun screaming about the unconstitutionality of the income tax from your 8x10 guestroom at Club Fed.

Oh, and by the way, Einstein, Marwan Barghouti was convicted in civilian court of multiple counts of murder. In no society in the history of mankind has it been "illegal" to hold a convicted mass murderer.

Ha ha ha ha ha thanks for the kind words.

I've not put in a 1040 for just over ten years now and I informed the IRS that I had no intention of paying a tax that does not exist and I've not heard from them since.

It has saved me lots of money over the years, Who's the fool... laugh if it makes you happy.

As for Marwan Barghouti I will only say... one mans terrorist is and mans freedom fighter.

Have a nice Christmas and keep paying your tax!!!
