@athousandyoung saidUhhhhhh, ok
There are many benefits that come with rich people moving out starting with prices coming down.
Get Suzianne or someone to tell you how a rising tide raises all ships.
I’d love to get your take on it. Of course, its author could be wrong. Like, when SCOTUS is wrong when they rule in favor of constitutional law that, dammit, just does not suit you. Now, where is my poster board ?!?!!
@averagejoe1 saidRising tides, not rising taxes.

@averagejoe1 saidWhat an idiot you are
Well,, then, you should petition the govt to control that situation, put in restrictions and regulations to Control people and prices and amenities. Freeze property values. And make everyone equal!. Choke out the natural flow of things, choke out freedom of movement and investment. Equality will save the community.
You are on to something, man. Maybe you would qualify as our new FAA chief!!!
Stating the known consequences good and bad isn’t a call for government intervention
We leave the heavy hand of government to right wing republicans now and they sure are keen, they’ll tell you whether or not you can terminate a pregnancy, what books your children can read, what shows you can take your children to, whether or not you can even say ‘gay’. There is nothing that right wing republicans do not want government to control. Really joe you need to catch up with the rest of your party.

I'm sorry to skip the abortion thing, I personally am tired of it, they should have planned better.....some people just don't want to snip a beating heart. You are closer to, say, Dr Kevorkian, than I am. Are we cool?
What books? If I , an independent, put a book "Maggie Goes on a Diet" in the school library, it could be REALLY bad for my neighbor whose child is overweight. It makes obesity look really bad, a loss of self-esteem. Do you think it is reasonable for my neighbor to stand against such Woke books in the hands of our children? It would ruin this child, Kev. Tell me I am wrong?
What shows to take a child is up to the parents, no problem. But if they are under the control of a teacher who brings Tran-type people in front of them, that is not the same thing as a parent choosing what their child sees.......taking them to a drag bar in Key West. Capice? You see, the teacher I mention above is the 'heavy hand of the government" that You mention above.
The teacher I mention above is the 'Heavy Hand Of The GOvernment " that You mention above. Shall I write it again for you to get the picture?? Naaaa, I think you get it now.
Whether or not you can say gay? Who can't say gay?
Can you respond, are you going to go Suzianne on me?
This was a good thread topic, learned a lot. In summary, rich people moving into your neighborhood is only a good thing if you are planning to leave that neighborhood. Several posters tied in knots to say gentrification is 'nice', but can't square that with higher tax burden.
Ask a conservative in Austin TX what they think about all the Californians jacking up property values. Find one person who is not currently in the process of moving out whether they think it is a good, or nice, thing for them. I'll wait.
@averagejoe1 saidHave you ever directly answered a point that’s been made to you Joe or can you only ramble nonsensically around the point.

I don’t have to cite cases, anymore than you, whether you agree with abortion or not is irrelevant to you using the heavy hand of government to prevent someone who believes in reproductive rights from exercising those rights.
Books have been taken off shelves by your heavy handed Republican state governments, even those dealing with historical facts.
You’re the slave Joe, you’re the guy with the peasant mentality who likes big brother controlling his life.
And those are facts Joe.

@kevcvs57 saidYou missrepresent average Joe. If a woman becomes pregnant, voluntarily or involuntarily, I have often said if they want an abortion, go get it now, 6 or 7 weeks. If they want to get an abortion about 3, 4,5 months into the deal, I will let people like you go the ghoulish route, and feel just fine with my opinion, because I know this person waited too late to have the abortion. I do not feel sorry for her. I do not feel at all like you do. One of us, is wrong. Can you respond?

So, politics aside, it seems you are saying that a government teacher can have a child read a book that makes a little fat girl feel absolutely horrible. It will probably ruin her life. She will be bullied etc. etc. etc. So could you respond to that. This should be interesting. I think you are saying Democrats would not take the book out of the library, but Republicans would. Is that right? So which of the two groups is handling this improperly?
Now I challenge you for an answer. I just gave you mine. You may take some time if you’d like. 😗😒🙄🤔
PS: as to heavy handed govt, libs are all about conservatives having no say, as you go about your business of indoctrinating children.
@wildgrass saidBut as the millionaires run up prices, with their fancy house and with all the money they are spending in town, our house value would go up. You sell the house, big profit, live cheap somewhere, and invest your proceeds so that you can make money, no matter your choice of investment. You will ride the coattails of the rich, just hold your nose and be prosperous!
All this seems off topic.
If someone lives in a neighborhood where property values are skyrocketing, and they were intending to stay in that house long term, gentrification is not a good thing.
@averagejoe1 said...only if you move. If you stay you just get the massive increased cost of living. So the rich folks are forcing current residents to move or shell out cash to big government in order to stay in your school district.

In the business world this is unrealized gains. In the real world it is a boot in the butt courtesy of uncle Sam.
@wildgrass saidYou are correct. The great state of FL allows property taxes to remain normal as long as you don’t move, I’m told. So the rich guy who buys the house next door will pay big time current mileage rate…..his stationary neighbor will not.

I wonder if that is cool, though. Seems like it would stop the tax base.
@averagejoe1 saidEven with the Homestead status - I think that's what you're talking about - Florida homeowners are looking at a 13% increase in taxes on average this year. If your home doesn't qualify, you're looking at more like a 30% increase in taxes. On average! Of course this is pricing people out of their school districts.

What the heck are you talking about with the tax base? Makes no sense. Are you saying that when rich people move into neighborhoods that suddenly everything the government does should cost more?

Yes, I did not get in the weeds about the various levels of taxation in Florida, I was speaking more about the concept .
By tax base, I mean the total amounts of money needed to run the government which are derived from taxes. So, as you know, in FL some properties sit for may years with no relative tax increase. So folks with high taxes look across the street and see a little 80-yr old couple, 50-year residents, paying hardly anything. Hmmmmmm. Would not the property be the consideration for levying taxes,,,,not who lives there.
My granny lives in a small house right next door to the Hilton Hotel in Miami. She pays $3300/year under the Florida concept, and the Hilton pays $2.8M. The city could use a similar tax for a similar piece of real estate, but alas, granny prevails.
@averagejoe1 saidIt sounds like you are advocating for an overhaul of property tax code. I am intrigued.

The elderly are an interesting example because they're not employed, and often don't have the ability to seek out other sources of income if property taxes increase dramatically. I don't think these folks should be subject to higher tax burdens just because a real estate developer decides that the neighborhood needs a 20-story hotel in it.
Currently, I think tax code and other government incentives favors the developer, and favors the constant increases to real estate taxes. It doesn't have to be that way.
