It's time to negotiate a deal with Putin. Push Zelensky to let Russia keep some of the eastern provinces that are really more Russian than Ukrainian anyway (think of those that overwhelmingly supported Yanukovych), so Putin can save face and claim a victory. But Russia and Putin also know now that invading neighbors is not the walkover they thought it would be in 2022 ...[text shortened]... lper status instead of membership. Who cares? There really doesn't need to be a world war over this.
This post could swap out Russia and Ukraine to make the exact same arguments by right-wingers for the Mid-east.
That aside, I did advocate at the beginning that Ukrainians surrender to have a bloodless war. Millions of displaced Ukrainians and 40,000 dead civilians later, maybe the would've been the better option. The Nord Stream would still exist, Sweden would still be neutral, billions of U.S. dollars wouldn't have been wasted....
But then there would still be dictator but with an invincibility complex. Whether Ukraine surrendered at the beginning or does so now, Putin will believe he can succeed at anything, despite the "bloody nose" he received. As you say, Putin's word is worthless and he'd continue to expand.
The only way to achieve peace is if the U.S. becomes allies with Russia. If anyone attacks Russia, the U.S. must defend them and vice-versa.
@sh76 saidWhy would they even consider such a silly thing? He deserves to spend a little time in jail with the people he sent on Jan6th. He will be forever remembered for what happened on that day and he was the cause of it. One of the worst if not the worst President in U.S. history. Your children will learn about it in school.
@Very-Rusty
===I believe he ran and this is my opinion was to keep his sorry ass out of jail. ===
If that were the case, they should have made a deal with him that he retires to Mar-a-Lago and stays out of politics for life and they drop all prosecutions against him.
Win-win

@sonhouse saidStop repeating lies of anti Russian propaganda. Nobody in Russia ever said they wanted to bring back the USSR. Tell our government to stop controlling Iraq's oil revenue to prove it is not a puppet of the USA.
@Metal-Brain
And YOU being a nice tame commie, RELISH the day when the Soviet empire lives again and the Ukraine war is just phase one of that push.
Moldavia and Poland would be next. The Russian assshole have already said that.
"When we invade Poland we won't be so nice as we are treating our Ukrainian brothers'' is what one Russian general said.
So kiss my ass you POS commie you have ZERO credibility here and always will.

@vivify saidI believe the bridge for Russia and the U.S. becoming allies has been burned for sometime now. It is a nice thought, but they are not on the same page about too many issues.

@vivify saidI don’t agree. Japan won’t do any better if the US has 8 more battleships. Nazi and Imperial Japanese strategy also assumed racial superiority as being a factor in their victory. They didn’t believe China would unite, that the US would get involved or that Russia could put up a fight because of their beliefs that these populations were cowardly and inferior. Under what scenario do you envision an Axis win?
If not for Pearl Harbor their chances of winning were quite realistic.

@vivify saidAllies can only happen between people of similar mindsets. Some of the basics to be an ally of a western nation is democracy and some basic freedoms and human rights standards. Russia is likely not up to scratch.

Ketchup.
@vivify saidThe only way to achieve peace with Russia is to give them Ukraine, Romania, Poland and the Baltics so they can set up “Fortress Eurasia” by controlling certain specific choke points.

@AThousandYoung saidI meant if not for getting the U.S. involved in the war by bombing Pearl Harbor, the Axis Power's victory in Europe was quite realistic, if not guaranteed.
I don’t agree. Japan won’t do any better if the US has 8 more battleships.
EDIT: But then again, Pearl Harbor actually proves your point about dictators not being aware of their own limitations.
@Rajk999 saidGood point. Look at all the countries that are part of BRICS. All are notorious for anti-democratic human rights violations.

It isn't the Russian population wanting the USSR back it is Putin and his crones.
And you knew that full well COMRADE.
@vivify saidIf they'd have surrendered in 2022, Russia would have hanged Zelensky, set up a puppet regime and probably been in the Baltics and Moldova by now (and possibly Poland).

Now Putin got a real bloody nose and a demonstration that he can't walk over his former satellites so easily. A negotiated deal now won't enable Putin to think he's invincible. He's evil, but he's not stupid.
That's why peace makes sense now while it was impossible in 2022.
