US President Barack Obama has changed his mind and will now attempt to block the publication of photographs showing the abuse of prisoners by US soldiers.

The US government had previously said it would not fight a court ruling ordering the release of the pictures.

Mr Obama now believes the release of the photos would make the job of US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan more difficult, White House officials said.

The pictures were due to be released by 28 May, according to the court ruling.

The court order was issued by the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in September 2008, in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Whie House officials said Mr Obama did not feel comfortable with the release of the photographs because he believed their release would endanger US troops, and because the national security implications of such a release had not been fully presented to the court.

Question:
Why is Obama going to ignore abuse from US troops? and how would the release of those photos endanger US troops?

Obama's been a real piece of crap on virtually every issue affecting the military so far. We're getting mostly a continuation of GWB policies there.

Maybe there are very good reasons for doing so that can't be released to the public.

That sure sounds like something we've heard for 8 years (at least).

If a dictator was desirable, I'm sure the Framers would have made arrangements for it.

Maybe GWB was right.

They did make arrangements for this sort of thing. Didn't they? Or was the system changed along the way? We have representatives to keep an eye on the secret stuff, so we have both oversight and secrecy.

Come on guys, how easy is it to change 8yrs of intrenched military policy? it aint going to be done in the 1st four months. Obama released the papers on torture already, if he releases the pictures don't you think the citizens of Afghanistan and Iraq are going to be a bit pissed and paint the entire military with the same brush? US citizens know we tortured, how graphic do you need to get?

Obama isn't in control. He must tow the world order lines. How else do you explain all of the campaign lies he told. He was off at a Builderberg meenting shortly before he won. He was an elected official as was Hillary at the time of this meeting. He is no better than Bush jr.

You think people in Afghanistan and Iraq don't know that their fellow citizens were tortured and abused?

The truth is the truth, why keep trying to hide the dirty details?

I don't remember them making arrangements for the US government to torture people. Could you site the section of the Constitution where they did so?

like what?

I personally don't know why anyone would like to see pictures of abuse, however, why not release them?

On this I agree with you (I think) - he should have allowed the release of the photos.

The claim that it would endanger our troops is that they would serve as recruiting tools for insurgents and our enemies as examples of how evil we are.

One problem by not releasing them is that Obama is essentially saying that the releasing of the pictures would hurt national security and I disagree - I think it's the commition of the acts themselves that harmed our national security.

The pictures should be released to make sure that we know what happened and to make sure that those responsible are made responsible.

well, covering up abuse from US troops is no way to make friends either.

agreed.

Again, I agree.

I don't know! They're secret!

But they are apparently good enough for both the far right and the far left, once those parties get into power.
