@shavixmir saidExtremists are loudest.
What boggles my mind is how we have such a large and vocal contigency of trailer trash on the site.
In normal life you don’t bump into so many extreme-right wing, conspiracy driven, fanatics.
There are probably a lot of posters hear who are reasonable middle-of-the-roaders, but it's too hard to debate with any nuance on a board like this.
When all you have is one idea that you want to pound over and over again, posting on every thread is easy. But when you put out a nuanced argument and all you get is an insult from one wingnut or the other, it's just discouraging and you don't bother posting as much.
That's why the wingnuts are overrepresented per post.

@shavixmir saidOnline these nutjobs can anonymously share opinions they'd be too afraid to express in real life.

Metalbrain once said "all women deserve to be punched". He wouldn't dare utter that in public. On the internet, he and Rajk can share whatever abhorrent thought they suppress in public.
We all probably have more relatives, coworkers, neighbors and friends who are Metalbrains and Rajks than we realize.

@vivify saidFurthermore, opinions are expressed on social media platforms which would not be printed in the Times or Newsweek or the Economist, because online platforms are not accountable for content. The editorial board of print media can be sued if they print defamation, incitement to violence, hate speech, etc.; social media platforms, however, are a free-fire zone, and this tends to attract extremist vipers.

@Suzianne saidThere we go.
Unless one lives in a red state.
Vivify you remind me of those people who didn't "know one person who voted for Trump".
We coastal liberals do tend to live in a bit of a bubble.
@AThousandYoung saidNearly all of my in-laws are Trump supporters. My father-in-law especially, and nearly all of his family members.
There we go.

I became friends with the parents of a classmate my twins have after we started setting up times for them to play together. The father: fervent Trump supporter.
I'm surrounded by MAGA everywhere I go.
