Japan did not have hyper sonic missiles or nukes. But what aircraft carrier are you referring to?
If Russia does ever decide to do a first strike every single US aircraft carrier will end up at the bottom of the ocean. The USA put too many eggs in one basket. The reality is that aircraft carriers are sitting ducks for a first strike advantage.
Also hypersonic missiles are good but they are not perfect, they can be shot down and the US is really good at shooting stuff down just ask the Iranians.
The idea that a country that needs to beg N Korea and Iran for missiles and drones could take out the US in a first strike is nonsensical

Like the article says, they have a lot of work to do. Patriot missiles were not meant to take down hyper sonic missiles, but if you waste enough of them you might get lucky.
