Postscript: Some commentators seem bemused by the fact that both toxic dumping and the theft of fish are happening in the same place – wouldn’t this make the fish contaminated? In fact, Somalia’s coastline is vast, stretching 3,300km (over 2,000 miles). Imagine how easy it would be – without any coast guard or army – to steal fish from Florida and dump nuclear waste on California, and you get the idea. These events are happening in different places but with the same horrible effect: death for the locals and stirred-up piracy. There’s no contradiction.

Obviously his editor spotted his inconsistency in time for the aforementioned explanatory postscript to be added before printing.
I do thank you for the additional info - as I had no idea Somolia was as massive as U.S.
In addition, I hope nations, those who dump and those who fish, keep in first rate contact so as to avoid fishing where others dump and dumping where others fish. Otherwise Europe and Asia will be poisoned also.
In fact, for dumping and fishing exploiters to have operated in concert til now indicates the entire operation ranks as conspiracy against Somolia.

No, this doesn’t make hostage-taking justifiable, and yes, some are clearly just gangsters – especially those who have held up World Food Program supplies. But the “pirates” have the overwhelming support of the local population for a reason.

Somali people can get looted, polluted and treated like peons in the great circus of geo-politics. But if some poor fishermen decide to fight back against the agressors suddenly they are the bad guys and can't get some different angle stories published on them?

This lot has to do with your facetious remark about the looting and polluting of Somalia's shore.
I didn't say "to steal fish from Florida and dump nuclear waste on California," I quoted that from the article. 🙄 What's the distance between Florida and California? According to this http://www.convertunits.com/distance/from/California/to/Florida it is something like 3685 Km. What's the length of the coast in Somalia? According to this https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/so.html it is 3025 km. So as you can see both distances have the same order of magnitude. The point that was trying to be conveyed in the article is that Somalia has a very large coast and so the scenario of looting and polluting doesn't have to be wrong. And the author of the article used a comparison familiar to USA readers so that they could have a feel of the magnitude of the coast of Somalia.

Article has one problem. It's a complete work of fiction.
1. Somalia doesn't have a fishing industry and no one is fishing off it's shores anyway. (Because of the pirate problem)
2. No one is dumping any nuclear waste in the ocean.
It's just typical blabbering of the black bay area newspaper, nothing is their fault, whities the devil, etc, etc.
