We're getting to the point now where most everything is 3D-modeled and then fashioned with lasers, robots and computers. With productivity up (you can run three shifts with robotic workers non-stop), manufacturing workers are quickly finding themselves a thing of the past. What's important is that your students get a good grip on math so that they can compete not only with American college graduates but also workers from St. Petersburg, China and India, etc. for back end jobs in marketing and accounting or R&D jobs.

Yeah, a white/chicano science teacher telling black inner city kids that their country is great but that they need a good education to be able to appreciate it is so racist.
How about "Mexicans and Chinese are taking our jobs, we need to get our jobs back in this country, boycott foreign goods so we can get our manufacturing jobs back"? Is that les ...[text shortened]... racist?
I'm not the one who openly prioritises my race and a foreign country over my own.

I have a hunch you wouldn't like living in the restrictive culture of "your people" and you know it. You'd probably end up getting in trouble because you're accustomed to saying what you think. Lucky you can do that where you live now, aren't you?

Originally posted by AThousandYoungI think this is the reason a lot of people find the archetypal American difficult to stomach. What you have told your students is really rather arrogant let alone insulting and wrong.
One of my 8th grade students told me this. I told him he was wrong. I said we make the advanced items, and we let other countries do the simple manufacturing of consumer goods because we've moved on to the advanced stuff. I said we make computers...umm....weapons...
What else do we make in the USA?
Scientific devices like gas chromatographs maybe?
You have basically told these kids that the rest of the world is a bit dumb so they do all the simple, stupid stuff while you (Americans) do all the clever stuff. If kids grow up actually thinking that´s true then there´s no surprise if the rest of the world considers them arrogant.
Anyway, I would bet 90% of all high tech equipment in your home was manufactured in one of the countries you told your students did the simple stuff.
DSR has found some of the good exports from the US and you´ll find it´s a pretty good balance across a range of products that most developed countries are into.

Originally posted by Sam The ShamNice, the classic "if you don't like it then leave". Don't you think it would be better for him to try and effect change than just up and leaving? Sam, I'm guessing you are from Texas, aren't you? I wish I could have seen you during the Clinton era, so I could have said, "If you don't like it, then leave. Go someplace where they don't have economic stability and governmental surplus of cash."

I'm from Los Angeles. Moved somewhere else when I didn't like it anymore. Happy?

I am just tired of living and working in such an overwhelmingly liberal, socialist, "hate the man" PC environment that when this kid tells me the US makes nothing it just astounds me and infuriates me. These kids are being brainwashed, no doubt about it. They need pride in their country and in their system because the US system does work. And, they need to understand that in the US, you kinda need a college degree. We can't all be Kobe or Souldja Boy.

Your biggest industry will be the low paying service industry. You all will be working at walmart selling plastic junk made in china.
