If you remember back to the tea party, they came into Congress with a mission and plan to cut the deficit. Over the last 4 years of Obama's presidency, the deficits came down substantially, ending at half what it was under bush.
2017 was an absolute disaster for Republicans. They were voted into all of Congress, had the presidency, had everything. They couldn't handle the responsibility. Added massive spending, doubled the deficit, undid it all.
They are children, lacking skills to navigate this issue successfully.
