Good point,
You need a good PC to play the latest games, whereas buying a game for X-Box or PS2 is guaranteed to run just fine. Retail price difference between games? Almost nothing. Retail price difference between hardware? Heaps.
Best to leave games to the console, and computers to working out pi to the 10,000,000,000,000,000th decimal place.
Yeah, I have a PlayStation 2 which I just watch movies on. I'm not like most other video gamers though; whenever I play, I think about what the source code would be, as I am a software developer. I like to copy things, and I like to know how to copy things, that's why I think about the source code when I play games.
I will consider a PS3, but there's no point buying it straight away, when few games are out (and games that do not take full advantage of the hardware; take a look back at some of the first PSX games, and some of the later PSX games. BIIIG differences). Better to wait a couple of years for the price to come down and lots of games are out.
I was also thinking about an X-Box, so I could put Linux on it (as a lot of people do).

You upgrade a PC, it will last you for about the life of one and a half consoles.

Price of a good PC when PS2 first came out in NZ? $2000 to $3000 (hell, I spent $4000 on mine, built from scratch), excluding upgrades.
Price of a PS2 when they first came out? About $800.
