I know they didn't ask to go over there. I feel terrible that they are there. They shouldn't be, and it's horrible that they and others are dying there. However, when the rhetoric shifts so that we have to dance around the real issues because the troops may get "upset", this is a tactic used by the supporters of the war to drar attention away from the real issues.
not the politics of the matter...

I think it's so funny that those who spout off "support our troops" are the first ones to defend the war THAT IS KILLING THEM!
Imagine that! We support you! We sympathize with your plight! Now take this machine gun and go about America's business for us.

isn't that what they enlisted for?
as soon as i get out of high school and then college, im goin into the military fully expecting to have my life endangered...
someone correct me if i'm wrong
but isn't that what i'm supposed to do?
Originally posted by rubberjaw30Iraq is the new Afganistan. This happened because there is no real government there. We have created a new training ground for terrorists. People come to Iraq from all over the world just to kill some Americans. Such a graet strategy. Create a war and keep it "over there."
troops come back to US they indirectly bring terrorists with them...
gotta keep the war over there

could you explain this? i know i came back and i didnt bring any terrorists with me...
by the way, thanks for serving...
i truly respect that...
what I meant was, if america completely withdraws, the terrorists will see us as weak...
it's just their way of thinking...
with their religion, they won't see us as peacefully leaving, they will see it as "the infidels being weak, we should attack!"
the islamic religion calls for such irrational thinking...
then you get another 9-11-01

They joined the National Guard thinking they would be remaining on American soil. We have the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines to do battle overseas. The focus of the National Guard up to now has been "domestic emergencies," not military battles. I may be wrong, because I only personally know one person in the National Guard.

Originally posted by rubberjaw30I doubt they enlisted to be a quite expendable pawn (no pun intended) for some redneck's backwater geopolitics. In fact, the armed services are disproportionatly from lower-class (I use the word "lower" in an extremly relative sense) backgrounds - people with not much education when they enlist, and they're probably just looking for some life training or a decent career. Any pretensions to patriotism are the result of the naive notion that they will actually be doing something benificial for our country, and not be treated as an object in a very irresponsible game.

Originally posted by rubberjaw30Because we don't, and never did, have an Army big enough to do what we're trying to do over there. Nor do we have a culture that will allow us to pin such a large region under our military boot. We can destroy, but we just aren't good at occupying. It was stupid for Bush to think we could pull it off.

Originally posted by rubberjaw30When you get out of college you wont want to go into the military. They wont want you either. Education teaches to to be a critical thinker. The military prefers those who blindly obey orders.
