So to summarise:

1. I told a racist joke to my sister.
2. My sister responded in a way that seemed even more racist (even though it wasn't).
3. I was shocked and lectured her for a couple of hours, listing Turkish people I think fit the stereotype but she does not.

If she'd had any sense she'd have pretended to laugh and then reported you to the police and/or social services.

Interesting that you titled the thread "a joke" rather than "are my family a menace to society?" or similar.

She said she doesn't like turks. I asked her why not, and she said because they are arrogant and stupid and they always brag (Sadly, I have to admit ...[text shortened]... ve of turkish people in general here.
I am definately not trying to prejudice my little sister.
Arrogance can be perceived as such but it may not be so. I moved several countries in my youth and was seen by my peers as "arrogant", meanwhile it was purely shyness and a lack of self-confidence, so I kept to myself. Strangers want to fit in but often they're not let in. Look to yourselves to see why outsiders keep (or are kept) apart.

Well said. In addition, different cultures have different body languages, which can also lead to misinterpretations. And people will often behave in the way you expect them to behave (a well-documented psychological mechanism).

Maybe then the fact that the rest of the world expects Swedish men to be homosexual means that in the end... no, wait... that was another thread. Interesting theory, though.

Rag, threads on serious topics such listing the countless reasons for that particular phenomenon should really be in the Debates Section.

Yeah - it may be true that most Swedish men are homosexuals. It could be a naturally occurring phenomenon because it is so cold living there and they have to huddle up for warmth. Y'know , in today's society there is nothing wrong in admitting any sexual preference you like. I'm sure that most Swedish people wouldn't mind admitting this fact- as they are a very liberal minded group of people 😏

Hmmm, I guess that would only apply to Swedish men living in one of the countries where those jokes are told (as I said, I have never heard any of them in Germany or Norway). Swedish people living in Norway would just become very stupid. And Swedish people in Sweden are not confronted enough with those expectations, I guess.

But this discussion gave me an idea - I should really start to expect my opponents to make blunders all the time. Let's see how that works.

Ya'know, a film just won some independent film festival about two gay cowboys eating pudding.

I know I saw this somewhere, I just can't find the link.
