Well, clearly a conversation with you is not going to work if you seriously think that a question about friendship - what it means to be a "buddy" - can be characterised as an "obsession" with a word.

No, it's not as simple as that. In the UK and Australia, for example, the word "buddy" is often used by strangers - as is the word "mate" - to signal a certain distance or be faintly mocking or condescending. Indeed, it might be a word used to address someone in a hostile situation.

A lot of people also use "buddy" for friends and acquaintances that are clearly not close. Beyond the dictionary, it's often a vague and somewhat meaningless word, in and of itself. Hence my question on page 1.
