It wasn't as if the OP specifically addressed someone and asked if they were gay. It was just a general enquiry. It is up to any individuals if they were to respond to say if they are gay, with pursuit to have like minded correspondence. Any one else could just ignore the thread. Why should it be an issue to them?
If the OP had intended to find out who is gay to cause offense to them, then they should take it up with the site admins. Right now, it doesn't appear that xe intended any harm.

I'm just kidding : ) Propriety is a good concept, it's just that I've gotten used to a lot of irreverent banter in the fora just like most people. If the Chess forum is for chess-related comments, isn't the General forum for general stuff? I would take it to mean all subjects other than those for with a specific forum exists.
Because it isn't done. General forum doesn't give one carte blanche to lose all sense of propriety. Wrong setting entirely. This shouldn't need to be explained to you, it's common sense.

OK fine, if you're comfortable with someone asking if anyone likes to play butt darts in a venue like this, go with it, be free. Have fun. That's my opinion.
Terrible.
Originally posted by Evil Pawn 666Speaking of words, I would offer a point on language, I believe that "homophobic" is a word designed to put down those who find homosexuality distasteful. One can respect the individuals right to their sexuality, not find it intimidating, and still find it distasteful. Homosexuals are not routinely accused of being "heretophobic" are they? The homosexual camp have cleverly devised use of various words to their own ends. An example here in the UK is "cottaging" which according to the Cambridge Dictionaries Online means "sexual activity in a public toilet between men who are not involved in a lasting relationship with each other". While I personally find that idea extremely distasteful, I am not fearful of homosexuals in general.
[b] Homophobic is a very explicit word. Fear is the defining aspect of the word.
