redhotpawn.com is an Internet chess server (ICS) which connects chess players all over the world.
Date of inception: 21 February 2001
Web address: redhotpawn.com<br />
Banner: Play chess online, it's free to play and anyone can join<br />
Type of site: Internet chess server, social media services
=== Main Features: ===
The site offers chess players a virtual space in which to conduct rated or unrated correspondence games with various time limits and blitz games in real-time. The site offers a browser-accessible Java-based user interface with configurable boards and pieces; support for mobile devices.<br />
Registration required (email address); the member defines a unique public user ID and a log pass code; free membership allows access to basic functionality; paid membership ("subscriber" ) allows access to additional functionality.<br />
Other features include: Fischer Random960 chess, set piece from any position, regular chess-related blogs, individual tournaments, team (“clan” ) tournaments, automatic rate calculation (only relevant to RHP, not directly convertible to OTB (over the board) ELO or USCF ratings). The site offers a searchable data base of players, as well as a searchable data base of played games and games in progress; completed games can be annotated and published. Private messages can be sent between players. The club feature allows special forums and tournaments exclusive to members of those clubs.
New players can get a "greeters" game, so that they meet a person who knows the way around as well as having a game against an active player.
There are lively chat forums on various topics including chess, spirituality, politics, science, culture, sports, general interest, etc). Generally the forums see postings in several threads each day, so that there is always someone to communicate with. Threads are closed after 60 days to keep the contents fresh.<br />
Generally accepted rules for correspondence chess apply at RHP: consulting chess books, chess journals, and published (incl. online) data bases of games already played is allowed. It is not required to inform one’s opponent of one’s (intended) use of such resources. Use of engines or endgame tablebases is not allowed for on-going games. (“Engine” means chess-playing software used to analyze a game or a position.) Engines are allowed for post mortem analysis and unrated games.<br />
Upwards of 200,000 players at all strengths are registered. Upwards of 20,000 games are typically in progress at any time. [these data to be confirmed by sys admin at redhotpawn.com]<br />

Originally posted by moonbusWhen you mention date of inception, somewhere near the top, you should identify British software engineers Russell Newman and Chris Moreton as creators of the site. Not sure, but I think RHP was an outgrowth of Rival Chess.

Originally posted by FMFThe function of sales in virtually all market segments involves direct person to person communication; the marketing function guides by indirectly communicating an awareness of products or services within the market it serves. Effective marketing is driven by an objective 'outside in point of view' [what are our prospective customers' actual needs and wishes?], rather than an ingrown 'inside out point of view' [our prospective customers don't understand what we're trying to do]; the advertising function serves up timely reminders of a company's presence in that market. Russ' sole business objective here is to sustain increased site membership by utilizing Wikipedia's online presence as a resource as he has already done effectively on Facebook and Google [not to engage in an academic exercise].

Originally posted by Grampy BobbyIt's an encyclopedia, Grampy Bobby; the entry should be an encyclopedia entry. It's intended for readers, not "prospective customers". It is most certainly not comparable to Facebook and Google.

If the RHP entry is treated like a "marketing initiative" where the "sole business objective is to sustain increased site membership by utilizing Wikipedia" and not an encyclopedia entry, then it will probably get taken down, and rightfully so.
You should try to demonstrate your ostentatious sycophancy when it comes to Russ in other ways and not seek to drag the short entry in a direction that defies the worthy spirit and integrity of Wikipedia.
moonbus' draft is pretty much spot on and Handy Andy's suggestion is apt.
Originally posted by moonbusI was a subscriber for several years and there were no adverts. As a non-subscriber now there are adverts but not nearly as obtrusive as in the past. There used to be an advert page that came up when you clicked on a game, and there used to be panels down the right hand side. However, I barely notice the adverts anymore and they seem to be restricted to a band below the red panel above (New Games, Forums... etc.) and the grey panel (New Thread, Public Forums... etc.),
Do subscribers see no adverts at all, or fewer adverts?
EDIT: I wouldn't know, since a) I'm a freeloader here, and b) I have an ad blocker anyway.
