@sh76 saidThis is my strategy as well.
My strategy is simple. Put in at least 2 vowels and two popular letters (r,s,t,l,n is the first tier, then d,b,m,f and c). If the first try is close, I'll go for it on the second line. Otherwise, I'll try a totally different set of 5 popular letters with 4 vowels between them. By the end of the second line, you'll have enough for a good guess on line 3 and line 4 should be cake. ...[text shortened]... missing.
I can only recall once that my third line was just more letter fishing and not a guess.

My best so far.
The words I used:

And guessed right with highlighted letters.
First word choice makes a big difference.
I didn't get a single letter on my first word. I knew that wasn't a good sign.

I'd like to demo how my strategy outlined above works, so SPOILER ALERT! Don't look below if you want to try today's.
Started with "irate." Excellent first word because it has 3 vowels and 2 of the most popular letters. The hits weren't enough for a guess, so I went with "sound." The two guesses contained all 5 vowels and the 4 top consonants (Plus, I think "d" is underrated - it's less popular than many letters but tend to be a key letter in the words it is in - unlike h, for example, which is often appurtenant to another sound).
After 2 lines, I had "SxARD" (the r could not be in the second position and so had to be in the 4th) and there's only one word that fits that combination.
@sh76 saidHuh, those were my guesses too.
