Why do people always seem to be either ONLY dog or cat people? We've always had both, so I have the worst of both worlds... plus fighting between them.

I own both, or should I say I own 2 dogs and am shared by 6 cats. My dogs love me in part because it is imprinted on their DNA to be part of a social group. Cats on the other hand are by nature loners. Whith the exception of lions, almost all memebers of the cat family seldom seek out the companionship of others of their own kind, save for mating purposes. However the common house cat is is the exception in that it will live out its life alone or seek the comfort of a clowder. Sometimes that clowder may be their people and the mixture of house hold pets that they live with. So the social befriending of a cat, at least to me, is a gift and not the fulfilling of a "DNA programing" like my dog has. I still love my dog and I'm sure she loves me but my cats seem to have a little more choice in the matter.
