I own both, or should I say I own 2 dogs and am shared by 6 cats. My dogs love me in part because it is imprinted on their DNA to be part of a social group. Cats on the other hand are by nature loners. Whith the exception of lions, almost all memebers of the cat family seldom seek out the companionship of others of their own kind, save for mating purp ...[text shortened]... my dog and I'm sure she loves me but my cats seem to have a little more choice in the matter.

All cat people spew this nonsense. It is how you justify living with cats. "Oh, dogs only love you for food...dogs poop all over, blah, blah, blah."
Dogs do not love you for food, not that alone, really. They love you because you are their Master. You feed them, house them, love them, teach them and entertain them. They will protect you, if necessary. the other hand, I'm not sure what their charm is but I'm sure someone here can elaborate.
Animal behavior, be it domestic or wild, is pretty much the same across the board. To say that cats are better than dogs, or birds are better than snakes, or dogs are better than cats, or rats are better than lizards - it all shows an ignorance of animals and animal behavior as a whole that not informed by anything other than one's own personal bias. And that's it.
I've known exceptional dogs. I've known exceptional cats. I've known exceptional rodents. I've known exceptional lizards. I've known exceptional birds. To compare one with another does not show an understanding or appreciation of animals.

I've owned lizards, chickens, dogs, cats, rodents of all kinds, fish, turtles, rabbits, frogs. My brother had snakes in our house (shiver). I love animals. So I DO KNOW what it is like owning all types of animals. I agree that some fit people more than others based on preference/experience. I still think dogs are the coolest.
Unless one has some other type of expertise involving animals, I don't see what, other than personal bias and experience, would shape your preference for a particular animal that you might love most. If you think all animals are great, that's fabulous, but I wouldn't want to live with all animals, just my favorite pets.
