Initially you mentioneed your disgust at prison tattoos and I understand where you're coming from on that count. I wanted to point out that sometimes beneath the all the piles of sh !t there are moments of sanity that are depicted artfully and tastefully too.
Fair enough.

Now show me some.

Agreed, and not just regarding using foreign text. Don't get a tattoo just because it "looks cool", but because it has a strong meaning to you. And I have a hard time believing that any flash ever makes a good tattoo. Perhaps it's useful for a starting point for a custom design, but not by itself.

Then again, my tattoo artist does think that standard out-of-the-book stuff does, in fact, appropriately describe those people that get it

I agree, I have many friends that have gotten tattoos, Just to "get" a tattoo. They go into the parlor and just get whatever the artist finds convinent. However, as for me (I dont have any tattoos YET, but will) I draw my own designs and edit them, and they have meanings to me. A tattoo is way too permanant to just get one...to get one.

This shows your general ignorance when it comes to tattoos, tattoo art, and people who get tattoos - proving that you have no business spouting your poorly informed opinion publicly. Have you ever heard the old chestnut "Judge not lest ye be judged?"

A lot of prisoners get tattoos once they've "repented" of their sins and found "god." Which in some ways is just as bad, but has nothing to do with any gang or criminal activity. Others get tattoos to show an affiliation, as few get by in prison on their own. Still others get tattoos (as was mentioned) to remind them of life and humanity beyond the walls they've been confined to. Prisoners (whether you like it or not) are people, and have families, friends, lives beyond the crimes they may have committed.

People who get tattoos include the police and firemen who protect your sorry ass from the things you fear - including people with tattoos. Tattooed people are of every walk of life, every social class, every colour, creed, race, sexual preference and gender.

You forgot in your smarmy, self-important, judgemental list to include people who have tattoos due to their culture and upbringing. Samoans, for example get fairly extensive tattooing as a rite of passage to adulthood.

All in all, despite the fact that all of my explaining comes to nothing when faced with someone so ready to jump to the conclusions you have, you are a victim of middle American, "traditional," popular, socially acceptable views propagated by puritans and bigots. You have been programmed with some of the worst social morays. Simply, since no one else has said it yet - you are an idiot.

Mine come under 1 and 2 but certainly wouldn't call myself trash, I earn 30+K a year so the classification of "Trash" is crap, just because I own a motorbike??

"A lot of prisoners get tattoos once they've "repented" ???

No, I doubt that very much.

"People who get tattoos include police and firemen"......

I'm sure there are some out there, but I've never seen one.

"Samoans get tattoos yadayadayada"

Ritual scarification is a savage primitive rite of passage that should be banned from the planet.

"You have been programmed/jump to conclusions/ are an idiot/etc."

No, I just think injecting ink into your skin is stupid.

I think I speak for a lot of the good people on rhp who have tattoos when I state unequivocally that we couldn't care less what your opinion is of our freedom of expression.

Good day to you.

It's starting to sound like an urban myth. 😲

Just checked with Mr Web and apparently it's true but spelled as VIHCTORIA. Hahahahahaha - what a wally. 😀

Considerably more dignified than the other hot injections served in prison.

Everyone modifies their bodies in different ways. Some are more deliberate than others and some are more permanent than others. Some are mostly cosmetic, others mostly functional.

I suspect that piercing/tattooing/etc are becoming more prevalent in the US because there seems to be an increasing emphasis on individuality, and it is one way for a person to make themselves stand out a bit more, at least in relation to the general public. And even if most of your friends are also tattooed, tattoos are still more different from each other than non-tattooed skin is.

I have pink/purple hair (and in the past 3 years, have had every color other than yellow in there at least once), multiple piercings, and a tattoo. I've done all of them because I like them aesthetically, and the tattoo has a lot of meaning to me. Whether or not other people like them, well, the only one whose opinion matters - my partner - approves.

And for the record, back when I was in college, I didn't see the point of tattoos or piercings. Things change.
